McGregor's Hefty Fine

The Nevada State Athletic Commission fined Conor McGregor a large sum of $150,000 dollars for his actions during the UFC 202 press conference. On top of the fine, McGregor was order to complete 50 hours of community service.

As many know, it takes two to tango. Nate Diaz and his posse started this outburst after McGregor arrived almost 30 minutes late to the press conference. As McGregor arrived and immediately began speaking, Diaz left his seat and began shouting expletives on his way out. He followed this up by flipping McGregor the ‘bird’ and members of his crew started launching tape and filled water bottles in the direction of McGregor.

If you are not familiar with Mr. McGregor, he is not one to shy away from an argument. As most people would, McGregor retaliated. Likewise, he instantly began shouting and started firing water bottles and Monster cans in the direction of Diaz and his entourage.

The Commission determined the $150,000 fine because it equaled five-percent of McGregor’s $3 million dollar purse. Originally, $25,000 was discussed but the commission argued back and forth until the large sum was settled on.

Following the antics, the fight lived up to the hype. UFC 202 became the best selling pay-per-view fight in UFC history. Winning by a narrow split decision, McGregor avenged a March submission loss to Diaz.

After everything was released, McGregor messaged president of the UFC Dana White and said, “I don’t ever want to fight in Nevada again. Ever.” We will see how that plays out.

My Opinion

I was surprised that McGregor received such a hefty fine. The actions on both ends were immature to say the least. If I were in McGregor’s shoes, I would not want to fight in Nevada ever again either.

On the other hand, it will be interesting to see how Diaz’s fine unfolds. His hearing will take place November 10th. Diaz was seen smoking a vape pen during the post fight news conference. I’m curious to see how the commission comes down on him for his actions pre and post fight.

Personally, the actions by these two do not surprise me at all. McGregor is loud mouth that is constantly instigating arguments. Pair this with Diaz’s outlandish actions and there is no surprise this is the result. I mean really, his signature taunt in the ring is flipping his opponent the middle finger.

It’s a good thing they are fighters. These types of actions wouldn’t be accepted in any other sport and they might be out of a job. The NFL banged Marshawn Lynch for not talking at a press conference. Imagine what they would have done if this occurred.

The circus act will continue to follow the UFC and the fans will continue to love it. McGregor steps in the ring again on November 12th fighting up one weight class this time. With a great card lined up, it surely should live up to its expectations.
