Tony Romo Takes ANOTHER Seat

Tony Romo recently posted this to his twitter

I’m sure by now you have all heard that FORMER Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has decided to change the direction of his career. He is hanging up the cleats and joining CBS as a color commentator. Bold move Tony. You got a big seat to fill.

He is taking over for Phil Simms, who has been with CBS for a number of years and behind a desk since 1994. Simms isn’t out of a job however. He still has multiple years remaining on his contract with CBS. He might be dropped to the number two broadcasting team. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him up and leave.

Regardless of what happens with Simms, Romo will waltz right in to a two man broadcasting team with virtually no experience. It’s pretty funny because it almost replicates his stardom in football. Romo came out of nowhere from Eastern Illinois University as a free agent. He came in to a game to replace Drew Bledsoe during the 2006 season and lead the Dallas Cowboys to a playoff berth (sound familiar to Tom Brady, yup). Next thing you know, Romo is breaking Cowboys records. However, he just couldn’t seem to get the job done. Whether it was getting hurt or losing in the playoffs, it landed him where he is today.

It will be interesting to see how Romo does as a commentator. He may not have reporting experience, but he has media experience from being a player. Also coming from being a quarterback, he is comfortable with being criticized and scrutinized. Those will both play to his favor big time.

He is going to have to be careful though. Not many people pass up NFL contracts and a chance to win a Super Bowl to sit behind a desk. Multiple teams were interested in him. Imagine how great it would have been if he ended up with the Houston Texans and he lead them to beat the Cowboys. Nonetheless, it is a decision he is going to have to live with. Also, not many people get this much attention when they transition to the booth. Once football season comes around, people are going to watch games on CBS just to see how he does.

Romo better start hitting the books. The last thing he wants to do is to fall flat on his face. I can imagine he is going to spend as much time as he can studying and practicing. He also has a great personality and is going to be working with Jim Nantz. Working with a veteran like that will make Romo feel really comfortable.

In the end, Romo walks away from this all as a winner. The Cowboys released him, so he was able to keep his signing bonus. The Cowboys can now give their full attention to Dak Pescott, who is the future of the team. But now that speech that he gave back in November where he acknowledged his passion to still compete all seems staged.

For now, all that’s left to say is good luck to Mr. Romo. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
